Shining Apples

Shining apples, pomegranates, and cool water
Silver baubles sparkle on the neck of someone's daughter
A clever girl once given to sound giggles without guile
Who can't divine the outcome of a lifetime left on trial

And who's to say the future is a place we'll never know
If monsters trample on the beds where tender flowers grow
But still the water falls into the pool of cool device
Where apples and the pomegranates float in bitter spice

I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead
Twisting around darkness in my head
Red letter days for the ones who see
Marked on a calendar, one two three

Just a little while till the world stops cold
Tired and pilloried, badgered and old
When my eyes opened, they widened to find
The darkness had turned my sweet vision unkind
